Anyone tried the megacheap UHF handhelds?

Noticed these things in the local hardware - 2 sets in a blister pack, for $40. Appear to use rechargable batteries.

I'm forever losing my handheld. I'm damned if I know where they go.

At $20, these things are almost disposable. For spotting over rocks, I presume they'd do the job. Range isn't important.

Dunno how user friendly they are - got sprung opening the packet to look at the instructions - but they couldn't be worse than the infuriating menus on the GMEs etc.

    Any thoughts?

    Regards
    Max P

Just as long as these are not using some kind of private channel, they may be allright. Some friends of mine bought some Motorola walkietalkies from overseas and the channels are not compatible with my CB radio at all.

Got a couple of these about a year ago, 40 channel UHF, from DSE or somewhere, they work just fine and go about 3 kilometres, but appear a bit heavy on batteries (however I use rechargeables; 2 x 3 AAAs)

BTW my missus banned the kids from using them to listen to truckies when we're driving - the language is, err, not for kids. (these units scan all channels)

I got some Uniden $99/pair ones from Harvey Norman a couple of years ago. The problem with them if the batteries are left in they go flat in about 2 weeks. ( yes, they are turned off )

I have the Uniden which were given to the kids by the 'Outlaws' as the kids had some cheap n' nasty types which failed quickly. So they went upmarket.
I was furious that they went out and bought CB radio's that pick up everything. It is good that the batteries go flat when they are turned off. We replaced the batteries and they had limited use yet when you check to see if they operate 4 weeks later the batteries are flat.

I use one of these clipped onto the overhead parcel tray and listen for the truckie's language when travelling. The language from these guys and others have stopped me wasting dollars on a proper unit to hang off the parcel tray.

Ive got a pair, theyre good value for spotting and talk on the normal uhf freqs. They can just handle car to car on a good day and I keep a couple on board so that If we get convoyed with people who dont have uhf they can at least listen in to all the convos and talk to a couple of people.

batteries last about a month with normal use, depending on what you call normal

I've got a couple of "digitalk" hand helds.
Again, they are battery suckers, but are a good cheap mobile UHF.

Have to have the volume flat out to hear a conversation (but that has more to do with the background noise).
