I thought you could buy the iPhone outright from say Optus/Telstra/Virgin and they will ulock it for about $80? All up spending about $900 to own the phone and be able to use any sim?
Is this not correct or by doing this is it still somehow attached to the respective network I buy from?

Cheers for the info, really want one of these as I need a new phone and am locked through my business to Commander plans.

I think that's right Mick, Optus will unlock it for free if you have been with them for 3 months. They did it for me after I called up.

    Thanks dj

I have only spoken with Optus (a while ago now) and seem to remember them saying they would sell the phone for around $850 outright and as long as I paid another $80 or so they would unlock it......unlocking from memory may take up to 10 days.

Has anyone else has bought one this way?

I called up and spoke to someone in Optus's iPhone Technical Support and they said they'd txt me when it had been unlocked. I then had to sync the phone with iTunes and do a restore for it to work. Took a few days for the txt to come through and about 10 minutes to do the restore.

I can't recommend Optus as a provider however, network coverage is terrible. Its fine around Brisbane and the Gold Coast but get too far away from the coast and its bye bye 3G, go any further and its bye bye all coverage.

Thanks DJ, heard Optus was not great for coverage and as I'm with Commander anyway, hoping it will be a simple case of unlocking and putting my own sim. Will keep you posted and thanks for the info.

I got my phone with Optus and in my opinion the coverage was absolutely useless even in Brisbane CBD. Mine used to sit there roaming continually between 3g and GSM. Everywhere else it was even worse!

Same phone... switched to Telstra... perfect ever since!

People with Optus blame the iphone but I've travelled a bit with it and it's not really any worse in reception than my wife's nokia.

I relinquished my contract with the customer service guarantee but I wouldn't recommend that as a way of doing it!

Customer Service Guarantee? Whats that? Optus have customer service?

In all seriousness, did they tear up the contract or did you pay your way out? Because I'm down to 6 or so payments and seriously considering just giving them the cash and running away!

    Whoops... it's coverage guarantee.

It is designed to allow people to get out if they don't have coverage so it only applies for the first month, and only customers that are new to Optus. If you are an existing customer then it doesn't apply to you.

Well bought one outright (pay as you go iPhone) and have made arrangements for Optus to unlock the phone which they said would take up to 10 days. Have to say though their customer service on the several calls I made to them was appauling and in todays modern worl of technological advances was wel below par IMO. Astounded at how badly they dealt with my request.....it was almost like I was the first person to ever ak to have their iPhone unlocked and one guy - on the 4th call - was surprised to even here that I had an iPhone

Anyway, will wait to see how it goes and will hopefully receive the unlock codes soon. Synced no probs with my iTunes already and updated the software fine. Commander will in the early part of this year be offering the 3G network and some of the other ancillery services that the iPhone can accomodate so will keep everyone updated on how tat goes.

    Thanks again for the info and if I may, a couple of questions;

    1. How do I rearrange the icons on my main home screen so I have my most often applications to hand rather than scrolling to the next page?
    2. Surely I can use on of my songs from my iTunes as a ring tone I notice in the USA you can make a ringtone and pay for it through iTunes but not in Oz.
    3. How the hell do I change the phone for when I am in another time zone. I have selected the time zones I want but would like to be able to select this zone so my clock reads the given time zone I am in?

Many more questions to come im sure and thanks again.
