I got lucky, first shop and closest to home was Super C**p Yamanto. They had 4" Kenwoods on special......$30 a pair. For $60 if I don't like them I can try another brand. Thanks for your help guys.
I Disconnected the 4" door speakers and put 6.5" MB Quartz in the front doors down where the side pockets are - these don't use paper cones so i'm hoping they'll survive water better the tweeters for these fit perfectly in the factory location
In the back I'm running 4" eclipse in the back these are running off an alpine 4x100w amp in the back cargo pocket
Also got 2x12" Rockford Fozgate subs hooked up to a 700w amp in the other cargo pocket. These are cabled with being easy to remove in mind for when i go traveling and then just throw them back in when I'm around town
I've got to take some photos of oil leaks from the transmission case for troubleshooting I'll grab so photos of my setup if your interested at the same time

Mmmmmmm Focal,still on my list
JL Audio do a very good low to mid range performance speaker. I have those and Alpine sub running off a V12 amp.
The only thing with running speakers direct from a deck, no matter how much you spend on the speaker, it is still limited by the quality of the output of the deck. If a deck sounds bad, better speakers will only make it sound worse or be dissapointing when it doesnt sound how you expected.
The other thing with displays in audio shops is that the speakers are generally all housed in the same enclosure. This will make the sound of the speaker deeper or increase the clarity and bass response. Put that same speaker in the std enclosure in your car or on a parcel shelf made of compressed nylo plastic etc, it will never sound anywhere near as good.
Unless you are going to fit an amp and thats only if you have a deck with pre outs as anything else is a total waste of time, and spend half decent money on a good quality amp, not that Sony Explode rubbish and the like, dont go overboard on speakers. There are plenty of quality and well priced replacements around.
Alpine do the SD series which are good quality, have a higher power handling capacity and are available at good car audio shops. Either that or Clarion.
Cheers
Andrew
For straight forward speaker replacements/upgrades.. you won't regret fitting the JL Audio..... I use them in the front of my Discovery and they made a huge difference compared to the SONY speakers that were in there before.
IMHO Sony and Kenwood don't make very good speakers....
There's not much you can do with 4" speakers really, they will always sound a little toppy.....but you can make slight improvements to the sound quality by fitting a decent brand.
I fitted my new speakers this morning (in work time)
So easy, no trim to remove even.
Now I can hear the radio without having to turn the motor off, only one speaker was knackered.
Thanks for the help fellows.
