Depends what you call non commercial. VHF marine and aviation bands are used extensively by recreational boaters and flyers, but both require both station and/or operator licensing. And then there are VHF amateur bands, again requiring licensing.

However, there is no CB type service (not requiring specific operator and station licences) in the VHF band, only HF and UHF.

I have some old commercial VHF radios I inherited. At the wattage they have excellent range, far better than a CB, but being a single frequency (and they are old enough to use crystals I've been told ) they are pretty useless.

and probably illegal. Channels in the VHF band are licensed by ACMA. You neeed to hold a specific license to use the frequency. You may also interfere with businesses who legally hold the license ( or possibly even agencies like the CFA/RFS )

If you get an amateur license it's possible you could use it in the amateur VHF bands. ( or sell it to HAM operator )

Sprint

The LROCV uses the VHF band for some of their communications and yes they have a licence for that use. NSW VRA also have VHF use however the best people to talk with are WICEN NSW who are licenced Amateur operators who volunteer to provide communications for community events or in emergencies like fire and flood.

Depending on age of the sets the other option is for people restoring things like Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Commission fire engines who want an authentic radio to accompany it.

I'm aware of that Wayne, they aren't in use. I actually used to use them for work long before we had mobile phones and they were licensed. At the time my father actually leased out that particular frequency in that area to other businesses (he owned the base station).

the unit i have aquired is only a couple of years old and is computer programmable.....

It will depend on the part of the VHF band it is tuned for, Sprint.

Amateur Band is around 144 - 148Mhz FM (refered to as 2 metre band)

I think the LROCV freq is about 160 Mhz (ish)

Aircraft also use VHF but lower down ~ 118Mhz to 136MHz although this is AM. These tend to be fixed frequencies at 25Khz spacing.

Lots of other commercial use of VHF.

If it's programmable it may well be a of use to an Amateur and therefore would be worth a few bucks - Commercial radio generally are higher quality than of the shelf amateur radio -(eg: Yaseu, Alinco etc.)

The VHF band is from 30 Mhz to 300Mhz which include other Amateur Bands, Marine, Broadcast FM radio and TV frequencies too.
