have both 27mhz and uhf in THE BOOGER not much on am but ch 35 lower sb is always busy with dxer,s. I like to have the long range just in case.
Got UHF and 27mhz in mine
use both...
sometimes go on trips with a mate that has both too,
use the 27mhz to get away from the ***** on UHF ...
side convo's and hang crap on other members of the group also ...
yeah, I like to have the option

umm.... potentially silly question, but whats the go with upper/lower side bands?
your allowed more wattage on ssb and the signal can "skip" much better giving much longer range in some cases thousands of km. SSB is basically cuting the am band in half side ways so upper half and lower half you have to "clarify" the signal to get better sound it can sound a bit like talking to the space shuttle.![]()
I've got a bit of a collection of AM / SSB sets out in the shed - some of which have a few extra channels programmed in there. There's also a 400W linear amp out there somewhere and a 5 element Yagi - but I haven't used any of it for years.
One day when I'm not working and have the time .............

Interesting thread.
I was into 27mhz a few years ago and have been thinking about buying a SSB unit to compliment the UHF. Always liked the distance and the ability to tweek the radio

That's probably the main reason I've kept it all - you can't sell it for anything, so might as well either hang onto it or give it to someone who will appreciate it.
Sorry - can't help you with the 1/2 wave. There used to be a 9' stainless whip and base out there somewhere, but haven't seen it in years. Got a funny idea the young bloke and his mates used it for something (like a dune flag aerial on a quad bike).
You can't beat the old Kraco. Being a crystal set, you can't go adding huge numbers of channels like a couple of the other sets there have had done to them, but the combination of a Kraco and a Leson cut through the crap like nothing else. And yes - it is easy to "tune them up".![]()
