he described a picaxe controlled switching unit that has a string of 10 inputs and connects them to a single digital display unit. He remembers it being a project thing from Silicon chip and all parts were from jaycar and has tentatively offered to let me know if he stumbles across it.

Thanks Ron, it wasn't as thats another OBD type of unit.
I'm starting to wonder if it was one of these and I got confused, The one I had in my mind didn't need a separate controller unit for each sensor.
