    well.....

the Polk db1040 subs are a single 4 ohm voice coil, so wired in paralell they will present an impedance of 2 ohms to the amp, which will be the best way to deal with what you currently have

What is wrong is to then turn the gain (volume) up to compensate. This makes the amp work too hard only to then fail and THAT FAILURE may do damage to the speaker. BUT if the volume knob is set below the distortion level, no harm should result.

There is more of a problem keping the current supply up to the amp. Some heavy wiring and VERY good connections are required.
If an amp or even head unit is driven to hard (volume turned up to high) it does whats called "clipping" its when it sends a DC signal to the speaker's, causing the speaker to stay "pushed" out burning the coil out.

When a head unit has the volume up to high the Pre-outs can send a DC signal to the amp, multiplying the problem to the speaker's.

Best way to tune is to run the head unit 3/4 of the volume it goes to then adjust the gain on the amp no futher then 2/3.

Its not allways the speaker distorting.

Most small installs make do with a 8 gauge power wire, where they lack is the earth, ensure a good clean connection and same gauge as the power, and also check the main earth from the battery to the body.

    Well my 2c.
