    Sorry misread the 'installs stuff from windows' before. I now understand you mean automatic updates not the freeware and/or malware that does crazy things.

    First thing to look for is add ins for IE.

    Now I may get this wrong as I'm doing it from memory (and I'm using an iMac... much more reliable than both my memory and Windows)

    Start by disabling them. Go to the Tools>Manage Addins>Enable Disable Addins

    Disable all addins and see what happens.
    Then go through and enable one by one. Testing to see how it goes each time.

    well I have just restarted my puter after disableing all the addins..we will see

    which one should I start to readd first...I take it the most important one?

    Just start with none added. See how it goes, then just pick one at a time and each time see how it goes for what you normally would encounter time wise before it locks up.

    Slow and steady! When or if you do find one starts to crash it, disable that one and keep moving through the others just to be sure its only the one.

    Let me know how it goes.
