Re the conversion, I have the technology having converted years of VHS family vid to DVD.
First up; you get VHS quality on a DVD, so you'll be disappointed with the quality.
I used my DV camera which has video "pass-though". Basically I plug the output of the VHS video player into the Sony DV camera, and the output of the camera into the PC. Then play the video while running MS Movie Maker to capture the vid stream out of the camera. From there, a quick edit, burn 2 copies. One for home and one for safe storage at a relatives house.\
