i personally think the problem is multi faceted.

me and a whole heap of others dont see the stalls and major timeouts but i do see some very slow periods at peak hours.

yes the server is slow because it is i/o bound but the timeouts and stalls are another issue altogether imho and i cant see the new server fixing them all.

if a sql specialist can tweak the mysql server better than me i am all for it, so let me know and i will shoot you some configs.

that brings it back to isps, hardware and software issues when it comes to the timeouts and stalls.

    some simple statements of fact

the server is housed at a pipe networks exchange in brisbane so aulro is a free read bandwidth wise for many people.

different isps have different size feeds into and out of pipe networks.

i know i get more complaints from people on optus and iinet than i get from others.

on the software side i get more people complaining using nortons, ca, pccillian and mcafee than the others by a magnitude of near on 10 to 1.

i way more support issues with ie than i do with firefox chrome safari and opera

have to run and do an outside job...

I use both Firefox and Konqueror - and the only difference is that Firefox takes a lot longer to start, and they give slightly different error messages when they time out.

Lately Ive been spending a lot more time on my firearms forum and less here mainly becuase of the drustration with speed issues.

You're not wrong about IE though I never could get paypal working on that, and they were no help, but with google chrome works fine.

I'll hit "post" on this message now so it gets done before the end of the day !

I don't know enough to know whether it is in any way connected with the fact that I have never experienced problems with AULRO at any time of day or night, but I am using Xubuntu and Firefox.

With Linux I don't have to hide behind firewalls (apart from the one in the router) or virus software. Maybe that is part of the reason.

Do other Linux users have any problems with the speed or stalling?

Yes, but not only aulro - although it seems to have improved noticeably just in the last few hours; perhaps the ISP is getting sick of my emails and phone calls! Currently using kubuntu and either firefox or konqueror.

Maybe I spoke too soon - took about 45 seconds between clicking on the send button and receiving the post.

Dunno what's happened now but AULRO is super quick at work now. Less than 1-2 sec to load a page.

    Woo hoo .

1.) i have done nothing that would make things quicker infact with the packet snooping etc that is turned on now it should be slower...

2.) i have my super guru looking at it and he has done nothing that would make it faster

3.) bandwidth at server end is 40% at its maximum spike so there should be no lost packets on the ethernet segment the server is on so lost packets must be further down the pipe...

4.) the server does get i/o bound that i already know but that should not make lost packets.

5.) server cpu load rarely hits 50%

6.) new server is still being worked on but it is a bit of a task as i am learning solaris as i go along and with the constant ssh attacks i wont be putting it online till i am sure i have it hardened.
