I have just been through this exercise, caused by I guess, the main belt moving back against the ac belt. The result being both belts reduced to half their width, the ac clutch wires ripped apart and the hose behind the clutch pulley being worn through also the bonnet lining well and truly whipped to pieces!
Unfortunately have not found a definite cause, the pulleys all look to be aligned,no tight bearings,no horizontal play in water pump or ps pulleys, crankshaft nut is secure. The belts are running quietly and the tensioner is not jumping around. For the last week it has been running ok using the spare belt......but until the cause is found, it is a time bomb waiting to happen again?

Great - my 'search' worked for once!
Now for lazy people like me, is there a way to clean the belt/stop the noise without pulling the belt off?

I developed the 'little birdy under the bonnet' squeak with one of my coolant issues not long after buying the car. WD40etc only worked for a day or so at best so we bit the bullet and just put a new belt on it - problem solved.

    Coolant is a BIG enemy!

My latest incident was the hose poping off the top of the thermostat housing (the ball shaped plastic thing joining 3xhoses) and after instantly dropping nearly all my recently replaced coolant, the fan belt got covered and the squak is back.

Tried putting up with it - as with you guys, only from cold - but now it is 'P'ing me off.

    Any suggestions for the lazy?
Will the talc after a few applications stop it all together or is it a week/2 week job?

Oh, I replaced that thermostat housing and put worm drive clamps on it. 10 year old plastic parts under the bonnet don't look or feel very healthy at all - might be worth sticking your head undetr the bonnet if you havent replaced yours?
I think I had a slight coolant smell for a while and this unit looked wet on top - only a small leak - but as much as you hope they will go away, they only get bigger!

    regards
