    Discovery Reliability

Hey, i was just wondering, there are alot of 97 to 99 disco's for sale on car sales and they are pretty cheap between 6 and 10 grand. they look good and everything i was just wondering about reliability (within reason to regular services ect.) but how long do the TDI models last?

I believe if looked after well they will go on and on. 1992 D1 200tdi still going strong, 96 Defender 300tdi ditto (apart from being rolled recently...).

I drove to melbourne and back picking up a trailer on way home non-stop and had no issues. Ran at 10L/100 and were very comfortable.

You tell me, perhaps these are the bargains of the century?
They have their pitfalls too, servicing is a must, not that roomy for what looks like a very big car, a bit of body roll and the constant waving to other Landy owners.
    Mine is a '97 tdi with 156000km's

mine is 96 and has 193,000 on the clock...just had a head gasket done on it but I had a tweaked pump....some have the original and are on 290
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

I had original head gasket... Then I had leaky injectors from a fuel stop solenoid playing up and the rest is history

They are good, just look after the fuel filters, change oil and filter regulary and fit an engine saver for controlling the water level.
Great vehicle and cheap to run

My 96 300Tdi has passed 312,000km with tweaked pump, still on the original head gasket still doesn't miss a beat. Like Chucaro said regularly replace filters and fluids(coolant included). I fitted a low coolant alarm, as most engines have seem to be damaged by coolant loss. At their age now all rubber hoses would be soft and spongey and should be replaced.

My 98 300Tdi has only passed 210,000km, but one of my friends here owns a 1994 300Tdi with 520,000km with, still on the original head gasket.
Past year he had to open the clutch, only because the clutch fork was perforated.
    Coolant level and Temperature alarm
    Regular oil and filter change
To change some brake and coolant hoses

And a Disco will be still reliable with these many years old

    Engine swap

Can you fit a TD5 and gearbox into a series 1?
