    Where to get Steel Rims??

    G'day again all,
Can anyone tell me a good place to get a set of steel rims (stock or Sunraysias)? I'm looking to get a set so I can put some more aggressive tyres on for off road use. I have the stock 16" alloys and Geolanders at the moment but I think I'll need something more robust. Should I switch to steel rims?
What size / offset / backspace is most suitable to run a set of 265/75-85/16s?

I'm thinking Bighorns, Centipedes or Mud Terrains.

I'm new at this with setting up a 4wd so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Stockers pop up on here from time to time but eBay or a wrecker is the best bet.

Being a D1, I hope you have a lift in place otherwise the bigger tyres will soon chop your bodywork up.

howdy, I bought a set of 15" Dynamics from 'Bob Jane T-mart' for $110 each, they are a nice rim with various offset options(I highly recommend these).. during my hunt for rims I was also quoted $55each for 15" sunrasias and for 16" I was quoted $112each(from Singhs tyre and mechanical)

    Sort of the same question..

Will the defender rims take a 265 75 16 on 98 Disco 1 and not rub the front wheels on full lock? I have a 2" lift and will cut the back wheel arches.

    Thanks

hey Ghost rider welcome to the site

I have procomp rock crawler rims on my disco they are 16" Rims with 245/75 big horns on.

you can get Bob Janes to get these in for you but if you contact procomp themselves you can buy them direct and save 20/30bux per rim. however because I bought tyres as well I haggled bob jane down and got them at cost. You can also get these in a 15" rin if you want a bit more rubber up your side walls

Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

There was a tyre mob at LR EXPO 2009 with steel wheels (15" & 16") at about $30 each I think.... maybe another lister can remember the details.

I have a set (5) of Landrover 16" steel rims with Mud Terrains on them (BFG's I think) with about 50-65% tread left on them. Ther are sitting at my folks place in Melbourne as I am up in the Top End. PM me if you want further details

Yep that's true rrturboD. 'Tyre Team' was the company (Smithfield: 9604 3777, St Mary's; 9623 3411).

They were Sunraysia style rims but were the 'Mangels' brand. I'm not sure how strong they are compared to other sunraysias, but they were not made in China or Taiwan, and i did see a lot of Landy's at the show that were using them. From memory 15" x 7" were $30, 15" x 8" were $35, 16" x 7" were $40, and 16" x 8" were $45. I'm pretty sure they were all 0 offset. Apparently that special was running up until a couple of weeks after the expo only, but you could always give them a ring, you never know.

I was going to buy a set of 16" x 7" rims so i could upgrade from my 31 x 10.5 R15 tyres, however i decided not to, and now i am kicking myself!

With regards to your question - should you switch to steel rims - I don't reckon it's all that necessary. My rationale:

-It was a pain in the arse changing five tyres over to go off road.
-The MTs I have are cheaper than the ATs I had - therefore no need to "save them for offroad"
-Vehicles like the D2 and D3/D4 for which there is not such a commonly available steel wheel seem to run their alloys in any conditions
-I haven't felt any need for a less aggressive tyre on the tarmac.
    -They look good.

I now run my 32" MTs all the time on factory alloys and only change back to a crappy stock set on steels when I need the extra power for heavy towing.
