I assume it's a Disco .
You can access it from the top but you'll need to remove the console, gaiters and un rivet the rubber cover retaining plate.. Then you can work on it easily.
I had the same problem and found that mud was the culprit, there was no rubber gaiter covering the lever workings on top of the gear box. Easy to remove from vehicle and stripped it down, lubed everything and it's now a "Slick Shift" 4 10mm bolts hold the lever box onto the gearbox
