    Transfer lever

    I was just wondering.

A couple of times I have gone to put the disco transfer lever into low it has been bloody hard.

Now I realise that this is probably due to it not doing a lot of off road in the last I don't know 8 months maybe, and I was wondering if it is possible to lub up the linkages?

and if so is it simply take of the leather garter or can you access it from underneath.

I'm hoping that it will loosen up again with use, however at the moment you really have to force it to move

    I assume it's a Disco .
You can access it from the top but you'll need to remove the console, gaiters and un rivet the rubber cover retaining plate.. Then you can work on it easily.
I had the same problem and found that mud was the culprit, there was no rubber gaiter covering the lever workings on top of the gear box. Easy to remove from vehicle and stripped it down, lubed everything and it's now a "Slick Shift" 4 10mm bolts hold the lever box onto the gearbox

    As he said.

Pull the centre console, drill out the rivets holding the rubber boot down around the lever and disassemble from there.

When mine froze up, I could change high to low but couldn't slide it across to lock the centre diff. I couldn’t see any specific cause, but had to soak and beat the crap out of the sliding rod to get it moving again.
Once apart a good dose of grease on everything and you will be amazed at how smooth it all moves.
There is a bit more of a write up in my thread subtle D1.

Easy job to do but allow yourself a few hours to complete. It can be a bit fiddly getting the connecting rods back onto the side of the transfer and the clevis pin back through the park brake lever. You may also want to trial fit the console to make the transfer lever wont foul when you put it back together

    Transfer lever

Mine was extremly hard to engage, was told needed new assy as it had corrodeded up.Got underneath and applied lots of penatrine to centre diff lock assy & it has worked well since. This was 2years ago,so before pulling out console try this as it may save a lot of work.

its in the D1 section...no need to assume

no problem locking the diff at all just stiff high to low

That was my original problem, once you pull one out, you'll see why, the diff lock side is just a slide of the shaft from right to left. But the Hi/Low is up and down and this is where the shaft must spin in the bush on the case of the tranfer lever assembly, there is a rubber 'O'ring in there, cleaning and lubing this area will free it up. It doesn't take much gunk to seize it.
