The Disco is a constant 4wd is you removed the rear shaft and had the CDL unlocked it wont move.

Could be a broken CV joint. I broke one on my old Disco and it made a heap of noise.

Thanks Woko, still a little confused though.

If it's constant 4wd, then shouldn't dropping the front tail shaft still allow driving with rear wheels?

If so, then this did not happen.
After dropping front tail shaft, I had no forward or backwards until I engaged the CDL to the engaged position. The rear tail shaft was left on.

I then assumed that the Disco is dependent on the front axles, or the transfer case is in backwards, if possible.

Help, new Disco 1 owner. Weird noise.

    Cdl - Center diff LOCK

It's a diff, just like a normal diff in a car.

When locked you get even drive (Like air lockers) when unlocked it's like a normal diff, one wheel off the ground = no drive.

If it had a viscous clutch then it would have moved a bit.

Disco's are dependent of both axles. There is a diff in the transfer box. If you lift any 1 wheel off the ground ( front or rear, left or right) with the center diff lock unlocked, it wont move.
So if the front shaft was fitted and the rear was removed you will have the same outcome of having to engage CDL to move.
A standard diff will only send power to 1 wheel. When the diff is locked it will send power to both wheels.
Remember that if you remove rear shaft with CDL unlocked and you wont have a hand brake. CDL locked and the hand brake will operate through the front axle.

The CDL allows for the 4wd system to operate on bitumen as it allows slip and removes transmission wind up.

Just check the oil in each of the diffs, the transfer case and the gear box. Drain each one into a clean ice cream container and check for iron filings in each. If there lots of iron filings or even worse, small or even large lumps of metal there is your problem.
