Thumbs down Help, new Disco 1 owner. Weird noise.

Hi Everyone, new to the forum.

Used to be Pajero owner and had a lot of fun off road.

I have recently purchased my new toy, 1991 Discovery 3.9 litre.
I was told that the gearbox was a little noisy, which it was, but only when you backed off the accelerator. All gears worked well except in back off there was a sound as if it were a thrust bearing noise.
I was also told that the gearbox was from a RR, but I haven't been underneath yet to see the serial numbers.
Anyway, I took it off road last weekend just to see what it could do. Did some pretty good climbing with it, then drove home.
Next time I drove I noticed a new problem. When I back off, I now get crunching noise that sounds like when the synchro is stuffed and the gears are crunching, The sound goes away on power and the gear changing is smooth without crunch. The noise only appears when backing off the accelerator.
Any help, please? I'm assuming gearbox but thought before I work on that, maybe it's a diff problem or something else.
    Thanks.

Sounds like you are well on the way to finding it. I was thinking diff. Have you changed the oil in either? I suspect you will find some lumpy bits in one of them, which will be the crunching noise, to help identify the suspect bit.

I had a funny knocking/rumbling sound that only became evident when coasting or at idle turned out to be the universal joint on the drive shaft. Sounds like yours could be a bit more serious though...

Is it automatic or manual transmission?
If its manual what happens when you put the clutch in?... still noisy?

Could also be worth checking the condition of the uni joints/driveshaft, they sometimes cause the weirdest noises....

I have to agree with discovery 94 here. Maybe remove your drive shafts 1 at a time and lock the centre. I the noise disapears with eaither one of the shafts removed then look at that diff. I'll be betting on a busted rear.

I had weird sounds coming from mine during one trip. Initially thought diff/propshaft/uni/A-frame joint. Turned out to be a severely worn wheel bearing. Sounds I heard (knocking/clunking/crunching) were not typical to wheel bearing wear at all (grinding/whining etc). Just my 2 cents.

    Thanks for all the help.

Will be checking diffs and unis today.

The noise disappeared when the clutch was in and to stop the noise when slowing down, I just through it into neutral and coasted until powering on. At power on, there is no noise.

Will post this afternoon at what I found.

    Wink Update

    Well, that was interesting.

Dropped the front tail shaft, then tried for a drive.
    No forward and no back.

Locked the CDL in high and then had contact.
I never knew the Disco was a front wheel drive.

Anyhow, after driving a bit, not too far, but all the crunching and grinding noise was gone.

Now I know what it is, thanks to everyone's help, does anyone know of a place in Mandurah WA that does these type of diff repairs. Would have a go myself, but no where to work on it.

    Thanks...
