Going to 2nd when cold can be a bit crunchy, and it might baulk a little, but this should go away when it all warms up.

I have exactly the model you are looking at (97 5 speed manual) and once warmed up the gearbox is sweet as.

BTW - when I say crunchy - there is no noise, it just doesn't go in smoothly when cold, but it has been like this from new.

OK when I say chrunchy I mean it sounds and feels like it catches one or two teeth before it goes in (it is just one or two, not a prolonged grind noise like a P plater), its almost like the synchro isn't matching the speeds. It doesn't need any effort or have to be forced in, it just chrunches on the way in. Thats Why I initially thought it might have been me coming off the clutch too early or some other driver error due to lack of driving a manual

I didn't really get a chance to get it completely warm so can't really say if it goes away when hot but is was definately better towards the end of the drive.

Better take it for a longer drive then. If it becomes smooth when warm, then at least that's pretty characteristic of this gearbox. If it still crunches, then start negotiating on the assumption that you'll be throwing some cash at it to get it right. (or keep looking for another example... in Sydney you shouldn't have to wait too too long, unlike Adelaide )

98TDI Disco also revs/changes cleanly. Full service history as I am still the original owner 280,000kms. Clutch kit fitted about 7yrs ago as the Fork wore thru the pivot ball.

    Times 3.

I have same car at 160,000km's.

When cold I drive very easy as most people do, its a bit notchy I call it to change from 1st to 2nd as you said but a recent oil change improved it.

If you buy a car for say $8k and its in great condition, so what if you have to do a reco, new clutch or similar.

Many people have huge loans, payments and depreciation that far outwejghs those expenses. The car is close to 14 years old, of course there be costs associated with maintenance.
Its all good, its fully tax deductible if you can make such claims, you sure as hell will not have a big fuel deduction.

I bought my Disco of a fella from this forum at the right price with low K's and I spend over $6k on it since.
Not bragging about it but in reality, its very little, I can confidently get in and drive to Perth right now and know its all working well.
Something is only worth what someone wants to pay for it, if you are happy, Go for it and enjoy as life is too short to worry about what if?

    x 4 again with Syntrans and 350,000kms

Wife changes gear quite quickly either cold or warm and has no issues, no baulking or crunching. I try to be mechanically sympathetic, take it nice and slow when it's cold and it still crunches. New synchros on first, second and third approx 30k ago didn't really make any difference.

After a while it becomes second nature to match the gear change with the speed of the engine so graunches and crunches dissapear. My wife can do it, I'm a slower learner!!

Once warm the gearbox behaves much nicer, but still not 100%.
    cheers
