I have also fitted hitough axles and county cv's and fully rebuilt the brakes, swivel hubs and wheel bearings, the diff gearing will come along with lockers as soon as i can bring myself to sell my harley which it should be a week or 2 away from advertising.
But i am going the whole 9 yards which isn't for everyone. my budget is as i have it i will spend it for the good of the disco. I have an illness its called landrover where i caught it i dont know do i want to be cured of it HELL NO. BTW the body lift was probably the easiest mod i have done so far, If you have brains and a welder any alterations you need to make are very simple with some threaded rod some 1/8 steel plate and a grinder. And thats if your fussy
forgot to mention i also have brit part steering arms, tough dog adjustable panhard rod and raked rear trailing arms. Soon to attempt the construction of a set of sway bar disconnects. And extended brake lines And front radius arms so i will have the right castor with the lift.

i just bought cooper 225/75/16 st
they look great on the disco and have so far been very capable off road.
i was thinking of muddies at first but reckoned they would probably wear quicker in the heat of the pilbra and increase fuel consumption noisier etc
cooper st have been through all sorts from mud to extreme rock witrh no problems at all plus civilised on the road

i had a set of 245/75/16 cooper st's for a few weeks i took of my spare parts car but they didnt do the job i needed. I can understand they would suit dry rocky conditions. Like I have been saying all along what works for me wont work for someone else and visa versa. I need clearance and muddies for traction on the variety of different terrain in the high country and also for the top end with its different types of mud, rocks and river crossings. Think what ur going to drive on and set ur vehicle up accordingly ask the pro's ask joe down the road who just came back from the cape ask ur father who went there 20 yrs ago the more people you ask the more of an idea your going to get on "EXACTLY" what you need for your set up

Nicho you've nailed it. One of the problems we now have is that there is so much stuff out there to modify your rig with you really need to know what you want to do to get the right outcome. until you really know what you need not want. You wont be happy, I've been driving 4x4's for work and pleasure and building them for a bit over 30 years in that time I have trialed damned near everything available. i know what works for me and what doesn't and what I want now isn't what I wanted when I was 27 or 37, I still want a vehicle that will get me to the same places I just need a bit more comfort due to age. That means a more careful selection of suspension components, including what tyres i throw under her as they are part of the suspension as well as helping to get where you want to go.

the only vehicle I can get to do what I want is to basically build it. I have now got the reg's regarding a single vehicle build for S.A. as that is probably how I will have to go to build the disco into what I want. as the old adage goes - different strokes for different folks

I am enjoying this thread mainly because I am in this exact situation, "What size tyres" and as pointed out "different Folks different strokes"

Current dilemer is whether to lift and cut for 32". draw back might be towing my camper trailer.

in my experience mate mine with heavy trailer was fine.. i towed a tandom on back of mine with dingo and parts. aswell as other heavy itms she wouldnt have been light... and dont get me wrong i noticed that there was a trailer behind me thats for sure, but honestly it was nothing to worry about.. be gentle taking off and all is good. i went up through the grampians which had some hills to tackle.

oh and i read somewhere earlier someone mentioning cooper st's... again. each to their own. but my mate had a set of these on his hilux in a 31s. they were about 80%. he got a big puncture (more of a gash) from a piece of 25x3 steel, about 150mm long. bit of bad luck for him. anyway he got the tire taking off the rim and noticed that the seam(join) on the inside of the tire was f$%*ed!! it was split from the inside to the point that there was about 2mm-3mm of thickness joining one end to the other... THIS WAS NOT GOOD. just to make sure he pulled the other 3 off to check and these were all the same! the seam on the inside had completely failed to the point that they looked so unsafe and ready to blow a tire at ANY point! the inside did not look good at all... he was then forced to buy a whole new set of tires... bit pricey.

have to say that after seeing this for my own eyes and talking previously to many people when i was looking for my 32s, that I WILL NEVER BUY COOPER TIRES, as i like to be safe in the car aswell as anyone else on the road and these tires were far from safe... .. random bit of personal experience for ya lol

Would have thought that they would have been covered by warranty but if they are anything like the rest of the tyre companies they would be looking for proof that they had been rotated by a pro and had the pressure checked on a regular basis by yet again a pro. And that you had in your hot little hands the original receipt and all relevant documants to prove you have done the right thing by your tyres. IMPOSSIBLE. But expect it when you pay anything even $420+++ a tyre so keep records and receipts to protect your hard earned when the tyres you buy dont last like they are supposed to last

I haven't done the maths, but all the repeat business trying to adhere to the warranty conditions would add to the cost of a new tyre or two anyway.

    Skeptic.
