Special terminal on the back of the alternator. Either the wires are loose or its a sign your alternator has worn out brushes.

Is it just the needle jumping, and the engine speed staying consistent, or does the engine speed change as well? My D1 (300Tdi Auto) has a habit, when cold, of surging (or wavering) around the 2k mark once it hits top gear at about the 80k/h mark. Once she is warmed up it doesn't happen. I have found that after starting, and before moving off, working through all the gears (P->1->P) can prevent it.

I suggest to do the easiest first: You should remove the "W" connector from the back of the alternator, and press with a grip the terminal and, principally, the crimped area (electrical contact between cable and terminal may be sulfated or corroded). Then replace the connector.
If the "crazy needle" disappears, it's solved. If not, then You should revise the alternator, as bee utey suggested.

    Regards
