Wheel bearings - when to replace

    Hi All,
97 Disco has now done 117,000k and the wheel bearings have never been replaced. There is no play (in the front) and no noise so I'm assuming they are not about to collapse. Question is have I gone past the use by date and should I just replace them to be on the safe side?
Also does the rear use a tapered bearing like the front. I,ve replaced plenty in a past life but 30 years ago.
    Cheers

    mark,

Definately overdue for a service and new hub seals, only replace if necessary during inspection. If looked after, they should see a LOT more than 117K.

Same bearings front and rear. If you want them to last forever, convert to oil lubed.

Thanks Bigjon, Is the conversion to oil lube straight forward enough for DIY?

Yes, very easy. If you do a search you should find a "how to". Basically replace hub seal (grease type) with hub seal (oil type) and don't refit the seal which stops oil from getting in there from the diff.

Can anyone help, was this a retrofit during service with Landrover under warranty on the 1998 models onwards. I recall the L/rover workshop did something similar but can't track it down anywhere.

200000km with no wheel bearings service.
We toke apart drive flanges and then it was possible to feel some free play. Just disassembled nuts and outside bearing to inspect. There was no damage and no water corrosion, then I added grease with a syrnge to the inside bearing, I greased outside bearing and finally mounted and adjusted properly. Made this to all wheels, just 20000km more without troubles. The bearings adjust has bettered the brake function, and corrected uneven pad wear.

    Regards
