Well the verdict has just come in, and the jury has said FAIL.
The problem is with the auto tranny - at low speed (moving off in first, or just trickling forwards) it seems to lock, and will not move forwards until you reach a certain amount of revs.
Now I presumed that it was down to not having moved in 8 months, and sat for about 6 weeks with no ATF in it, and that a bit of movement and driving it will loosen it up again. It had a good flush through with some nice sparkly Penrite DIII ATF, and a new filter, but did nothing else to it while I had the rest of the car in bits (I have no idea when it comes to auto trannies, they could be filled with witchcraft as far as I am concerned!)
Any ideas? Is the box stuffed? The torque converter? Both?

It's a RWC fail, as apparently the driveline needs to be in full working order. I think the inspector has nothing to do today.....
I had hoped that this wouldn't be the precursor to bad news, because the tranny didn't do it before it was laid up, the only real symptom from the box was a bit of a lurch with each gearchange (which spookily enough is now gone with the flush/refill).
I did replace the handbrake cable, as it was stretched, but when I replaced the brake drum, I did spin it around (rear propshaft removed, front wheels in the air) to make sure I couldn't hear the brake shoes rubbing after adjustment.
The box doesn't do the same in reverse, just D/1/2/3 only. The first time it did it, I cycled through the gears while stationary R-D-3-2-1 a few times, and it went.
sorry mate, i was mistaken, i used to have a problem where it would hold 1st gear for a long time when it was cold, i thought that is what you meant, i re-read your post and now understand your problem, so in fact i have no idea about that
double check the fluid level and the fitting of the filter... it might be sucking air in with the fluid and loosing prime in the box.

This is probably a stupid question, but could this problem be a binding UJ instead?
It has a fresh 2 inch lift (that is actually more like 3 inches compared to the old saggy suspension), and I had the rear propshaft off, and don't remember being that careful about lining it up when replacing it.
Don't fancy getting into the time, trouble and expense of replacing the box if all it is is just something simple!

when you drained the old fluid out was itcherry red or was it black like old engine oil? if your gearbox is the problem usually it will fry the oil and make it black real quick
i know it is a pain in the arse but if you drain the oil in the auto again into a clean bucket it should still be clean and no brass or metallic particles
hope this helps in some way to determine what is wrong!
