Lift pumps failing on a 300TDi are pretty common. Might just be a coincidence with the battery going flat as I can't see any connection between the two issues.
New lift pump is not expensive and they are pretty easy to fit.
Hi all,
My battery has been going flat for a long time and not holding charge. So I replaced it today with a new battery. The car started and ran fine yesterday but after changing the battery the starter motor would turn happily (unlike with the flat battery) but the engine never fired.
Not knowing a huge amount, I called RACQ who noticed diesel on what I think is the lift pump (it is on the driver's side of the engine and has a red crank handle - I have a '94 300Tdi). He tightened the screw at the top about half a turn, cranked the lever a few times and the engine started fine. It left it to run for a bit then stalled going up the drive way (my fault, not the cars). The engine wouldn't start again. So I tried replicating the RACQ trick - minus the tightening of the screw, with no luck.
Any thoughts on why changing the battery would have such an effect? How can I get my car started again?
Thanks.

lift pumps are very cheap and very easy to replace
sometimes you may have to turn the engine slightly before you can use the red handled primer.
you can undo the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter to see if the primer is working. if it is pumping, fuel will come out of the bleed screw as you pump the handle.
Solved: I booked the car into a mechanic so that they could potentially replace the lift pump. Of course, I couldn't get the car started so I called RACQ who went all the way through the diesel line not finding any problems.
After exhausting many possibilities, he found a wire on the underside of the injector pump which had come loose. The wire was preventing the solenoid from opening in the injector pump.
It seems that I inadvertently pulled the wire while replacing the battery!

Well that's a cheaper/quicker fix than a new lift pump!
