The Clasic I recently bought did the same.
Put a spanner on the sump bolts, all of them were loose.

G'day guys i've recently aquired a late 96 3.9L V8 Disco which is great except for an engine oil leak somewhere around the R/H engine mount (r/h as you sit in it) I think. I know you can't really say without looking at it but if you guys can suggest some common engine oil leaks i will check them out.
Cheers!

okay no worries, will check that out tomorrow was also thinking the oil cooler hose's after reading my book.
i'd be more worried if i bought a land rover which didnt leak oil.... just get used to it mate, seriously.. IMO you'd be very hard pressed to find a Disco of that age which doesnt leak oil
Possibles:
Sump
Timing cover
Rocker cover
Oil cooler lines
Oil Filter
Oil pressure switch
How is that for starters?
Clean it off, have a drive, trace fresh oil to the source.
Found the leak!
it seems at some point in the disco's life someone has cross threaded a bolt behind the oil filter (oil bypass or press sensor maybe) and filled the hole up with silicone. pretty dodgey but at the same time im glad i found it because it should be relatively easy to fix.
I have a 96 d1 and my leak from around the region was an oil leak from the oil pressure relief valve, there is a rubber o ring in there that can weep big time. hard to find initally after exhausting all avenues I found the leak. it then blows in all sorts of places disguising the origin.
It must be a common leak as I have had 2 timing covers leak from the same spot.

That is exactly where mine is leaking from! so its just a matter of cleaning of the silicone, taking that circlip off and changing th o-ring. Is it hard to get the press relief valve out once you take the circlip off? or does it pop out under spring tension.
Unfortunately, oil leaks will fail a RWC. I have the same problem with my disco, and this damn oil leak is the only thing stopping me from getting it on the road. 4 weeks so far trying to find where its leaking from. Thought we had it, but after another roadworthy check, it failed yet again. I have till tomorrow or I'm up for yet another rwc cost. On a pension, this is killing me.
Never again will I ever buy a Land Rover. Learnt my lesson the hard way.
Oil leaks fail Road worthies..... how come car yards get way with this. A quick under body wash before rwc inspection. A Land Rover dealership did it to me on a disco I bought, after taking it back numerous times complainingg and getting fobbed off saying it was oil split during a service...it always came back , sure it wasit was a head gasket leak.
