I am not a mechanic, but egger to learn, what is the best method to test the vac advance, I had a look and it appeared good but i did not know we had mechanical advance.
what is the best way to set timing? I set mine with the engine idling adjusting and then driving, next day adjusting then driving. and found 10 degrees advanced seemed best.

I hope this was right, I have learn't so much from the guys on here it is amazing!
    Thank you to you all!
Suck on the hose, if the diaphram is toast it won't hold vac, with the cap off the dissy you will see the rod move the base plate. The factory ones fail pretty quickly, I use the reco ones they use better rubber in them and seem to last. Reco ones are a fraction of the price of a stock one as well.

Just a thought, what type of fuel are you using? I try to put BP Ultimate 98 RON in mine as the difference between it and normal unleaded is huge

Drove from Mel to QLD getting 13.5l/km, going to 20ish+ 4wd, use a timing gun, set static to 9 deg (vac advance disconnected) then connect it should go around 20 or so, no vac advance if that does not happen.

But before my d1 was on gas I was getting the same fuel economy as you are now.
I checked and fixed all my vacuum leads and found the ends swell and don't seal.
I checked and fixed the vacuum advance which was broken.
The main thing was my air flow meter was not working right. The disco had heaps of power and drove very well but there was no way I could keep fuel up to it.
    After I fixed those thing I was getting around 16L / 100kms
I've just had the MAF meter replaced, but with little change in fuel consumption. A while ago I replaced the vacuum advance, but I have not thoroughly checked all the vacuum hose connection points. Great idea. Will do tomorrow. Hopefully I can stop getting 20l/100km on highway and 35l/100km round town and stop getting high on the fumes. I dred reversing sometimes if the windows are down. Thanks.

    Hi guys,

I've just changed from e10 (I know, I know) to 98. This seems to have got my figures down to just under 20l/100k. I changed the vac advance and mech says my timing is spot on so........

Assume this is normal. Mostly town driving in a 94 facelift es v8

the cheap vac advance units vary in quailty, some have no or very little movement and some have lots with a very soft spring.
there are ways to test and tune the D1 injection system with a timing light and a modern automotive multi meter (must have temp and m/s pulse), without the need for a plugin diagnostic tool (although something to check fuel pressure, engine vacuum and exhaust gasses is handy). when they are set up in standard trim they should get better than 14L/100km on the highway.
