    Idler pulley

Hi all, here's one for the guru's................After replacing the water pump this week the Serpentine belt has begun squealing a little (3.9 Serp motor) When I had a look last night I noticed the belt is running half off the idler, I took the belt off and checked the idler bearing and the idler assembly for misalignment and looseness and can find nothing wrong. At this point I imagine i'm seeing the water pump pulley a little out of alignment but that could be an optical conclusion.
So I'm left wondering what's up and if this a common issue. Tonight I will recheck the alignment and perhaps replace the idler assembly with a spare lying about. Hopefully it's not the water pump at fault.

OK so now I'm starting to get annoyed by this, have changed the tensioner and pulley twice, checked the alignment and still have the same issue. I guess a new belt is in order even though the current one looks ok

I've seen this talked about on here before, try spacing the tensioner with a washer or 5cent coin to correct the angles.

Have a bit of a hunt around to find more, I don't know which thread it was in
It may in the good oil, it's allways a good place to start
    Cheers, Kyle

Might sound stupid Wayne but there are two types of belts you can get apparently. One is smaller then the other.I found out when i changed mine and i couldnt get one of them on properly. Also sometimes they can be put on the wrong way around and in the wrong sequence..But i know you wouldnt do that.

Thanks, yeah I have now changed the belt, better but not good enough. What I don't understand is why all of a sudden?. It appears to be a little bit of play in the tensioner pivot so Kyles suggestion of a shim may be the answer.

All the posts I've read that had to space the tensioner were on the TDI engine, have'nt heard of it on the V8.
    Cheers, David.

Yes I found the same thing, though the tensioners appear to be the same on the TDI and V8's so maybe it's a wear issue.
The shim will definitely fix it, but that's tomorrow nights job now.

I had the squealing belt issue on a Tdi and the 5 cent coin fixed it up straight away

Well I shimmed it with a washer and the old belt, sort of fixed it but it needs a thicker washer. Think I'll fork out for a new tensioner.

    New bearing

I ordered a new bearing for my pully tentioner (99Tdi) after incesant squeeling, lasted a week then the canary started up again, tried the 5 cent piece, some reduction but not good enough.
So what is this shim you are talking about and where and how is it used pleased?
