    Now it's the gear box!

    Damn!

Took the car in to get this starting thing looked at. They couldn't find the problem, but spotted the thermostat was stuck open, changed that and looked at the fule mixtures. So it is running a lot leaner now, but starting is even harder than before. They couldn't find the problem though.

So any way, that was Monday - Wednesday I set out for work and the Auto gear box got stuck in 1st for almost the first half a K from home. Every morning since ti takes a little bit longer before it finally starts changing up. Then it works as normal for the rest of the day.

    So, what's that about?

Look at the Ashcroft site and you will see it is most likely the governor sticking, which is a sign that the auto is on the way out.

As above psots, have you ever had it serviced?

All moving parts need servicing at some stage.

For personnel insurance everytime I get a new Landy regardless of service history etc I do all fluids, belts and hoses. Costs me a bit but I don't seem to have the problems with any of my vehicles that are often mentioned.

Make sure its the correct fluids too which can be found in the good oil on this site which was kindly provided for everyones enlightening.

Prevention is far better than a cure and usually much lighter on the hip pocket too.

Hey - I learned something new today!

When checking the oil levels in your auto box you should start the car from cold, put it in neutral with the hand break on, and then check the dipstick! Doint it this way it turns out there was a mighty shortage of oil in my transmition. I have topped it up to reccomended levels, it took about 1/2 a letr.

So I went for a spin, but the problem seemd to still be there, although it did change up sooner than it did yesterday. Also, (I got boored at a junction and jumped onto the main road)n I found that rather than changing up at 4750 revs like before, it now revs up to over 5000 (before I noticed and eased off) and squeels like a banshee. Ooops!

So now if I take the revs up to 3500 or more I get this squeeling whiring sound from just in front of the console, sounds like it is under the bonnet. It does not make this sound if you rev it that high in neutral.

Ummmm, I think I broke it.

How much does it cost to have a gearbox fixed? lol

The question is "Where did the 1/2 litre go?"

My assumption is that you have dirt in the governor and from what I have read this is usually the first sign of a dying trans.

You could try a new filter and complete change of fluid. The procedure for progressively replacing the fluid is on Google or found in search here.

However there is no substitute for good maintenance and synthetic fluid throughout a trans life and once they are dying what is usually required is a complete rebuild which costs $3K or so.

OR There are a couple of second hand ones in markets..

lucky you are in Melbourne as you have 2 highly regarded ZF shops.

    Manuel Automatics Pty Ltd
353 Settlement Rd Thomastown VIC 3074
    ph: (03) 9466 4499

    Or

    A & B Transmissions in Dandenong (Vic)

I just had mine rebuilt in Sydney for $4000 including Torque converter.
Also went with synthetic fluid and fitted a temp gauge on the cooler line and its seems to run cooler since the rebuild or perhaps the synthetic fluid runs cooler as better viscosity etc.

I'd be dropping in to one of the above transmission shops and they will probably give you a good idea of whats going on.

    Cheers

    Mark
