So sorry please forgive my ignorance I think the first pic is what the hose should be attached to??? But can you spread any light as to what should go in the hole of the top of the air-box ( second pic )

Yep the cap goes off and the hose goes back on here. The brass (?) thread looks like the air temp sensor but I'm not sure. I know when I convert late D1's to early metal air cleaners I mount the sensor somewhere on the tin can near the AFM as there's no provision for it on early models.
