    removing rear pinion flange

Hi all.Any ideas how to remove the centre pin in the pinion flange.I am changing to a uni joint rear tailshaft and to remove the pinion flange a centre bung type pin is blocking the main nut and the rave manual say's a special tool is needed.I am not a special tool type guy but can't see any other way to remove the pin.
    Cheers

why are you removing the flange to change the UJ?

    edit...

    disregard.....

get in there with a pair of side cutters, cut the loop of the split pin using a pair of needle nose vice grips pull the leg bits out.

    done

its an art form but easy enough..

to get them back in curve the pin with the long leg on the outside get it started then drift it in, cut the legs to length and fold when you get the head seated.

Thanks Dave but maybe I wasn't clear with what I need help with. When my rubber coupling tailshaft is removed from the diff, the centre of the flange has a large metal bung which is called the rear pinion centralizing peg that the tailshaft centre slips over to centre it and it also prevents access to the flange bolt. The rave manual says to remove it with the special tool LRT-51-008.Any other options for removal would be great as it looks like it is a bugger to remove.

grab it really hard with a pair of vice grips then beat the vice grips round a bit and then wiggle it out.

(I thought you were talking about taking the split pin out of the nut that holds the flange on the diff)

Tried the vice grips and it seems to tight.Maybe I could spray a heap of wd40 on it and leave it for a day or 2 first and then try again.

if the vice grips are holding belt them with a hammer.

if they dont hold up tighten them up and go again.

if you look down the end of the spigot bush its got a thread in it, you can fabricate a puller or use a slide hammer.

You might find the centre pin is thread locked in! I used an angle grinder to cut up the existing flange apart, then it fell out!

    get brutal

    Hi Shane

I would second that it's probably locktighted in.

if you don't want to destroy the flange yet, I would weld a bolt onto the end of the pin and the heat will release the locktight, then using the thread as a crude puller to extract it.

Thanks for all the good advice.I was thinking of using an angle grinder but can someone tell me how deep the centre peg goes into the flange because I don't want to cut into the pinion thread and main nut.Using a slide hammer would also work well but I don't have one and I also don't have a welder as I am on solar power.

    eat locktite

    Hi Shane

    Any women in the camp?

You can try some nail varnish remover around that pin.

    Cheers Arthur
