Regrettably, it is a well know problem with the black tanks. What colour was yours?
However, the comment about the new lid is interesting.
A quick tip for all you Discovery 1 owners.
The factory radiator expansion tank has a known flaw in that over time the two halves wihich are plastic welded together can split and all your coolant will squirt out.
I found this out the other day when I was 20km's up the beach with no help in site!! Luckily I had a gun of silicone on me and managed to temporarily seal the split. When I got back home after the weekend away I bought another expansion tank and promptly flushed out the radiator and topped it up with some good quality coolant which was a really easy process. However, after driving for a few weeks on two occasions I noticed coolant squirting out again, although this time it was coming out from under the lid on the expansion tank. At first I thought I had some major air pockets i nthe system but, then tooka a closer look at the lid itself, fortuantely I had kept the old lid and compared the two - the repalcement is obviously an inferior plastic and could bend and flex quite easily and under pressure coolant was forcing itself up from under the lid. I simply threw the new lid away and repalced with the old - problem solved.
Hope this helps someone out.

Get the clear one they last much longer and better quality
My black one has now lasted 19 years.
Quite a few people find to their dismay that what has happened is that their head gasket is leaking and pressurising the cooling system. There are a couple of posts from a couple of years ago on the subject.
AFAIR Someone went through 2or 3 and then a Volvo tank before pulling the heads.

True Philip, but a lot more of us had the old black tanks split while having no other issues.
Re the pressure cap, I've had one aftermarket one do as described too, it was never fitted and an OEM ('Bleu' IIRC ?) replaced it.
from memory (which I never trust) an AU ford cap is the same and a bucket load cheaper than the genuine LR cap
Same as Phillip my 97 Disco has what I assume is it's orginal black tank. It makes me nervous though.

I recently replaced mine too. Only lasted about 230k kms and 16 years.
I replaced it with a genuine bottle and cap for under $100 delivered.
Didn't cause any problems though. It blew a few minutes after I switched the engine off. I just removed the cap to stop the flow of coolant. Then with the cap loose I drove another 300kms or so to get home which didn't bother it at all.
Or an alloy one if you want it to last longer than the car ; )

The tank splitting is not a bad thing, usually there us an underlying problem that causes it to split, excess pressure building up, i'd rather the tank split than blow a heater core or head gasket!
Common cause is a radiator thats never been rodded and is badly blocked, also a failing viscous fan.
Not saying it's not a weak point but, i think it's the best weak point.
Maybe for a reason?
