I agree with the handbrake and the air conditioning on trick.Great thing about the Landy hand brakes is you still have full steering control.The air conditioning has always worked a treat for me in different 4WD's I've owned.I do agree that the auto Disco's gearing is too tall for serious and safe steep descents,especially if it's wet and slippery when you do not want to touch the brakes at all.Try the air conditioning trick and then maybe look for reduction low range gearing.
