If your D1 has done over say 100-120KK then its probably time for new shocks.
The big advantage of premium shocks like Bilstein is that they handle corrugations better than standard shocks and will last a long time if not abused. They also usually make the car feel "tighter" around curves but this is not really the prime function of shockers.
However IMHO any shock other than the LR branded originals will give a harsher ride so it is up to you what your priorities are.
I use Bilsteins and am very happy with them, but mine are valved for comfort and these are now not generally available.
