Lower steering Uni joint loose on steering box shaft?

    Hi All,

As the heading states, was working on the Disco today and notcied some free play in the steeering with wheels off the ground. I tracked it down to the bottom uni joint in the steering where it mounts to the Steering box shaft - it was slop in it where it holds on the shaft of s/box. The slop is if I wiggle up and down but not side to side. I tried tighting the lock bolt in the side of it but it hasn't changed anything.

Has anyone come across this before? Or is this factory?

    Thanks,
    Rez

It has obviously been loose for a long time.
there is a neck on the steering box input shaft spline so that the steering column cannot come off if loose.
I would remove the UJ/ steering column and run a hacksaw down the split in the fitting that goes on the steering box input shaft , then tighten it up. The bigger split will let it tighten more.

    It is simple.
All you do is undo the top joint by removing completely the top bolt, same to bottom joint. You have to remove the bolt completely because of the safety neck on the splines.
Then you slide the column up as far as it will go and you should be able to lift the bottom away from the steering box shaft. ( or vice versa)

Just check before you do all this that the bottom of the column split is closed right up. If not you need a bigger spanner than you have tried so far to do it up.
Also a hint , lock the steering before you do any of this so that the wheel is in the correct straight ahead position. However you may not be able to do this if the bolts are in the wrong position. Some steering boxes have a flat so that the column only fits in one place but I notice the new steering box I have bought has a neck right around.
    Regards Philip A
