This is a great forum with a wealth of knowledge so i am hoping someone here can help me out.
I just recently purchased a D1 Tdi. It has been flawless up until yesterday.

Boost running around 15-16psi
Front Mounted Intercooler
Thermos Fan
Anyway, yesterday was about a 30 degree day and after spending a good 3 hours or so solidly driving through the bunyip state forest we came out near Neerim. (The last 20-30 minutes i was powering along with high boost working the gears). Once we got back on the tarmac i stoped the D1 for 20 seconds or so to talk to a friend then proceed to drive up a steep long hill. I was trying to keep up with him so i had it flat out on high boost for a prolonged period of time. I noticed i had a very distinct lack of power. It was struggling to make it up the hill. I then noticed the temp gauge was very close to the top. Generally it sits half way regardless of how i have been driving. So i pulled over. The car had not lost any water that i could notice. I gave it 20 minutes or so and continued to drive it as the temp gauge was back to normal. It seemed to blow a lot more black smoke than normal (Generally it does blow black smoke for a little while under heavy aceleration.) The temp gauge seemed to be fine until another big hill, where the temp gauge rapidly climbed again. I pulled over again and the temp gauge instantly started dropping back down to the normal range (1/2 or so).
After all this we 4x4ed in to a nice location for lunch and it didnt overheat once. I then managed to drive the whole way home (100+kms) without it doing it again.
Any ideas what could have caused this?
Is it simply because i gave the car such a thourough workout before for several hours on a hot day and it just needed some time out?
Also, after it cooled down and we drove home, it wasnt blowing the excessive black smoke it was earlier.

I am thinking maybe your front mounted intercooler (IC) is transferring a lot of heat back onto the radiator under heavy load, do you still have the standard TDi radiator, As you have fitted a front mount IC you have enough room to fit the larger V8 radiator, might be the way to go, Regards Frank.
Hi I have a 97 TDI300 and mine was doing a similar thing. It turned out to be the radiator which I have now replaced along with new coolant. I have just recent had a run from Wagga to Newcastle and back (6 1/2 hours each way) and the D1 run faultlessly, with a rock solid 1/3 on the temp gauge. I would suggest checking the free play on your water pump as well, they can run perfect and then crap themselves without warning

I agree wit Gazz. I hve 96 mdel with 20L engine, had same problem on long pulls up hill with camper in tow. had radiator cleaned out , now no probs. If vehicle still has black expansion tank look at changing as they get old & brittle. For a preventative measure i wll be changing min at every 200000k.
also fit an engine monitor, works on metal temp not water temp, a lot more accurate

only a few things to check,
cooling system; radiator, fan, thermostat, water pump, leaks (internal and external).
air induction; turbo, intercooler, hoses.
fuel; timing, amount
If your air induction and fuel system are ok then you should have exhaust gas temps less than 700C, given thjat you are getting boost it appears that the air induction side of the house is ok.
Unless you have palyed around with your injection pump the fuel should be ok.
Like others have said, check your cooling system. I prefer an engine driven thermo clutch fan although it can be a little more difficult to tell how well their working unless you know what to look for.
When out playing in the mud always make sure you check for mud build up on your radiators.

I think i am going to have a look at the radiator as the first port of call.
Hopefully that will sort the problem out!
Suggest you check the thermostat while your at it, would also block the 1/2 inch hole in the baffle fitted in the radiator head tank if you get it pulled apart.
