will have a look tomorrow, what exactly am i looking for? (remember, non-mech noob here)
updates from my day.
6.30 AM extra degreasing, find the engine #, rmove a ton of oil and **** so it's visible. take to pits, inspector takes literally 3 minutes, and passes the car.
WOOHOO!!
upload to facebook because im so excited, then took her driving.
First freeway run, sitting pretty at 100km/h about 2400rpm, ok revs??
afternoon building a deck at my sisters house, first night time drive, again, on the freeway, 100 km/h was as slightly lower revs, all good no hassles so far.
The auto selector was quite warm, hot even, do the globes run hot illuminating the selected gear? it wasn't very bright for how hot it was.
Also, i've now done 260kms on about 1/4 of a tank. seems good to me. well let you know how far i get of the full tank.
my bad, i apologize. the black bottle is the one prone to break and the opaque/white one is the good one.expansion bottle should be a black colour
mine does 2800 at 100k's but in another thread here i was told that was too high and i have found since than that i have the wrong (long) belt on, i will have to replace it as soon as i can.
be aware that the gauges are just that GAUGES they are nowhere near accurate i have had my fuel gauge on empty after 200k's but you can go a looonng way in the TDi, i have calculated around 960klm on the standard 89 litre fuel tank highway driving. Also, i've now done 260kms on about 1/4 of a tank
get the engine monitor asap as this measures the temp of the metal of the head and will tell you if your radiator needs rodding or indeed any other issue with the cooling system or head gasket and it will tell you a long way before the gauge in the dash will even move!!!!!!
What engine monitor do you recommend bigcarle?
I have two discos, 1 with a 200tdi and the other with a 300tdi.

i got mine off ebay and it is from Brisbane (Salisbury) it is called an "EM2 Watchdog" it measures the temp of the head from under a handy bolt so no intrusion to the waterways needed and it comes with an adjustable alarm and a spare wire to tap into the old pressure light so it goes off when that comes on as well was $149, cant see any on ebay at present but there is another for $129 that looks like it does something similar. but there is also i believe dave interesting things at the top of this forum i think he has one on offer but im not sure.
hope this helps
will check the plugs, and look for engine monitor, mine has the black expansion tank.
mechanic says all is ok, getting tappets done and a new fan belt today.![]()
black tanks split along the seam without warning dropping the water and overheating the engine before you even know there is a problem! if it does not look new i would replace it ASAP this is where the engine monitor comes in it will tell you of an engine overheat BEFORE any signs become evident including the temp gauge
Well done the 300Tdi is a great engine and they're great cars...so long as they don't have a sunroof (see other thread).
I've got an lpg fumigation conversion on my 300Tdi and it's great, also had the injector pump tweaked I think, and with all this I get around 900km from a standard tank almost every time. Fantastic cars full of character!
