I have a problem with my left front damper

    Hello.
    I have a 98 300tdi model Discovery.
I noticed a metallic clunking coming from the left of the front-end and can see when the springs are compressed that the damper is able to move through the bottom mount and hit the top of the front axle.
The bushing (when compared to the other shocky) on the bottom of the damper isn't compressed.
the spring appears to be operating normally.
    Does anyone know the reason?
If pictures or a video would help I can do that later today.
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Tom.

Either the bush on the top of the bottom pin is stuffed or the step in the pin has punched through the washer above the bush or the hole in the bottom plate has elongated/flogged out to such an extent that the entire bush is falling through the retaining plate.

    Rick, thanks a lot.
Actually the idea of the bottom plate hole being too big seems to fit with what I'm seeing. I will investigate further.

Luckily the bottom spring plate is bolted in so a replacement can be fitted fairly easily using a spring compressor or even weld up the hole in the old one and grind back to spec.

Well I had a chance to have a look at the thing properly yesterday and luckily it appears as if it's only a failed bush on the bottom of the damper (the upper one).
I may as well take this as a sign from God to install that lift kit.
    Thanks for the replies.
