    truetracs

    Hey guys,

Just about decided to order some truetracs front and rear for a 300tdi manual D1. I've got what I think is a ok price from GBR including shipping to AUS (seems cheeper than buying local)

It looks from there website like I can order one with a 3.9 ratio. To my thinking this would seem sensible with 245/75 tyres which I am also soon to get.

Would you stick to the standard ratio, or change to 3.9, or maybe even gear it lower?

I am also planning on getting a 2" lift from suspension stuff, any comments hear would also be welcome.

I'll try to take some photos and post up the fitting etc, - it might help someone later on - this forum has been invaluable to me in the past

    Cheers
    Nick

    Hi,

I was running Detroit Rear and Truetrac front in my D1 V8 Auto and found them great. Performed well both on and off road. You did not even know they were there.

As for the ratios, if 31" is as far as your going I would save your money and stick with the standard ratio. I found mine perform ok with this size even though it did take a bit of the edge off it on road. Low range was no problem.

Be warned though, the bug may hit and have the urge to go bigger as it did with me. I found it was drivable with 33" really had to hold out the gear changes longer and used a lot more fuel. Towing was rubbish as well. Still performed well in low range.

If your sure you wont go to much bigger don't change them but if not sure it's easier to do it with the Trruetrac install.
    Cheers, David.

    Ditto what Landover said

You do realise Just ordering a Truetrac for 3.9 ratio does not give you the new gears, you still just get the diff carrier/s It just means it can take a 3.9 gear set.

If you want a ratio change you must also order the 2 new crown wheel and pinion sets as well, A lot more work involved than just fitting the Truetrac carriers, because you need to set and shim the pinion height . Not quite a diy job.

I take it this question might be aimed at me.

They were going to be for sale be I have found out the D1 centres also fit into the D2. So are now going to be fitting in my D2. I do have some Maxi Drive Axles and flanges that wont fit the D2 though.
    Cheers, David.

    Hey guys,

I'm pretty sure I won't go bigger than 245-75 but i guess time will tell!

Thanks for the info, I hadn't thought about the gears, but that makes perfect sense now that you mentioned it. I might price the crown wheel and pinions but I guess it will add up so I will probably just leave as stock ratios.

The thing is that I feel 1st high is already a little tall, maybe it will come down to compensating by means of a little extra fuelling...

    For Mr NTDI

I've had twin truetracs in for a while now - and they are good.

However, a couple of points relating to their use and the 300tdi ( which I have)

    - Whilst a 300tdi has torque and power, it's a different curve to a V8. So even with diffs that 'lock', your Disco will have different qualities in comparison to not only V8's, but other tdi's with other types of lockable diffs. This is not a 'better or worse' thing, just 'different'.

    - See also driving tips with HUMMVEE's - they have truetracs too.

    - Search here about threads concerning truetracs - also spelt tru trac. When I got mine, it was a group buy ( who wants a true trac ..... or similar) That thread has a lot of info on installation. It's easy ( I did it in about 2-3 hrs each) but you'll need a couple of extra things to help.

    - I had a set of 235/85 (32 inch) All terrains, and whilst they were good, after a while I felt that I should have stayed with 30 inch for maximum use of the added traction. That 2 inch spring lift helps with clearance - I'd suggest staying with 245/70 or 75.

    - Usually, they are cheaper via the US ( I bought two with bearings from the US with postage for the price of one in AU)

    - When you do get them, plan on replacing diff flange seals, and have at least one speedy sleeve ready for the flange itself. ( More complicated if you still have the 'donut' rear propshaft).

    - Lastly, truetracs basically 'get you further into trouble' - you still can get bogged and stuck with them. Knowing this helps appreciate when you don't get stuck.

Good luck - a wise choice.

    Langy,

    great info, thanks heaps.

The best price I have got so far is out of the states, which follows with what you are saying.

I'll go and search for that other thread you mentioned now - any extra info is always helpful...

    Cheers,
    Nick
