rebuilding a 380 and 23o tranfer
hay all,
has anyone rebuild a R380 at home? I was thinking of getting a rebuild kit from ashcroft and doing it at home, anything I need (special tools) or press.
AMD/OR handy hints/traps etc?
Cheers NAT

next thing to do
I am in the process of bucking up some courage to tackle the next stage of my R380 rebuild.
The first thing that needs to be done, in your case is pull the ring off the output shaft, this will require a puller that has a ten ton working pressure.
Apart from a couple of torx drivers, I think the rest of the strip down can be done with the usual work shop tools.

Have a look at this thread for pics of the collar puller.
Using a V8 R380 in a Tdi
and,
Tools: A press for the mainshaft stuff, and some sort of tool ( like a big prop flange tool) for holding the end of the layshaft. It takes a lot of effort and a big breaker bar. Once the layshaft is off, the rest is easy.

The LT77 has the same collar that needs to come off. I've disassembled one but had the grind the old collar to weaken it because all other attempts to pull it were just distorting it.
I have one of those compact ram sets shown in Langy's link and just made adapters and things to work with it. The only thing I needed to have done for me was removal of a bearing cup from a blind hole. Normally I'd just do my bead of MIG weld but I really dislike doing that on gears with hard facing because of the spatter. I've since bought a blind bearing puller set with the expanding mandrels.
