    Body Lift legal in NSW

Looking to the guru's to answer this for me:

I want to put a 2" Body lift (White Tiger) on my 97 Discovery SE.
I have asked several people and got several different answers about its legality.

    1. No body lift allowed at all in vehicles with SRS airbags (which mine has).
    2. No body lift allowed at all in NSW
    3. Yes, but it will have to be engineered despite not being more than 50mm
    4. Yes as it makes no difference to the height of the vehicle at it lowest point (chassis).

If point 1 is correct there were models released in 97 that did not have the SRS airbag, so in theory I could just disconnect it and be legal.

If point 2 is correct, how does everyone who already has them not get defected?

If point 3 is correct it opposes points 1 & 2.

Point 4 just doesn't make a lot of sense (but I was told this by a mechanic who does a lot of this type of work).

Can any of the forum gurus shed some light on the subject and provide calcification one way or the other? Seems even the RTA themselves don't know what the correct answer is.

    Thanks.

I live in SA I believe this to be true you can add a 50mm body lift to any vehicle without srs air bags. But may be different in NSW

And as for air bags you most definitely not allowed to disconnect in any way shape or form as you are not allowed to make your car unsafer to yourself as the driver. It's like having a car before seat belts were legal, but your car came out standard with them. You would not be able to remove them

Im sure that this is an ADR (Australian design rule) so its no different across the country

If it was me I would fit it, say nothing and plead stupid to the coppers! You would have to be doing pretty wrong to get a defect.

I have a RRC with 50mm body lift as well as 50mm suspension legal only due to fully engineered in NSW, no airbags. I only really clear up 1 part of your question.

don't just fit it and plead ignorant. If you do this and have an accident and someone dies with illegal mods you will have a lot of time to think about it in jail as this is manslaughter due to illegal mods.

The 97 had airbags an an option. I can't see why you can't have the "option" to take them out. I'd understand if it were a factory standard on all models, but its an option so I should be able to remove it. We used to do this on hot rods etc - as long as it met the minimum specification that year model was released with.

Would't take this risk. I've been around modified cars long enough to see the ugly side when things do wrong - hence trying to get some clarification.

What I think you need to get clarified is even though it was an option, it WAS optioned on your car there for I would imagine be written someone where perhaps under your chassis number that you do in fact have Airbags....

it was my understanding that if you have airbags it is simply a no no..
the best thing you can do is stop asking the general public and getting varied opinions and experiences and ask someone who can answer your question like an engineer.

Agreed, which is what I have done only to have 4 different answers. Points 2 & 3 were both from Engineers. Points 1 & 4 came from mechanics who do these types of modifications.

I thought it would be safe to assume that other members of this forum would have worked through this same issue at some point and have a definitive answer.

If another forum member already has a body lift in a air bag equipped Discovery AND have not had any issues with the RTA/Insurance/Pink slips and/or engineer then a precedent is set and the question clarified.

If you have had the go ahead from an engineer and you get it done and that engineer to sign off on it you should be fine.
