Fan bearing replacement is there a cheaper option?

    G'day everyone.

I have just replaced the timing belt and all associated items in my 300 tdi disco. Realized the fan bearing needs replacing as well so I have been calling around for prices and everyone so far has told me I need to buy a brand new timing front cover with it to get the bearing and flange. At $400 plus postage I'm not overly keen to fork out this sort of cash if I don't have to!

Does anybody know if it's possible to just buy the bearing and flange from anywhere? Any advice is much appreciated.

    Cheers - Adam

Hey thanks JC I gave him a call today and he sells the bearings for $99. It's in the mail! They don't sell the flange but he said find a wrecked xf or xd falcon water pump and cut one off the end of it. Will either do that or get one made up. cheers - Adam

If you followed the post that "roverrescue" put up you could have done the whole job for $40, just buy the falcon water pump and use the bearing and flange out of that, easy peasy, regards Frank.

Where did you get the flange from, the falcon one is much stronger than the standard LR flange, Regards Frank.

Pretty sure the fan runs off the front of the water pump pulley whereas the TDi has a seperate bearing mounted in the timing cover plate, been a while since I worked on the V8, Regards Frank.

Correct Frank, you could get a universal bearing for a V8 waterpump but really not worth the hassle, the TDI is a different setup so any method of a cheaper than OEM replacement is good.
