Thread: ALWAYS use a Landy mechanic...even for the "simple" things like WINDSCREENS

If it's not a OEM screen, there's a pretty good chance it will leak. They typically don't fit properly. Water may well run down the pillar, soak carpet, rust the base of the A pillar...

It's been well covered on here before. And a rusted out pillar from a non OEM screen is the reason I sold my last D1.

Well hell, that's not very good. That sounds like reason enough to call O'Briens and tell them they've fitted the wrong screen.

Anyone else have this issue? Is it a genuine concern? I go to all this trouble and get someone to pay for a new screen only to have them install the wrong one...think I'd rather have stuck with the chip in the screen!!!

My old man had a similar issue on his Rangie Classic.
Something along the lines of the replacement screen that was fitted was a glue-on jobbie and they didn't put enough sealant around the top of the screen at the A pillar/roof join, then just put the trim over the top.
He wondered why he was getting wet carpets...!

Its certainly worth getting it checked I would have thought.

My last windscreen was done at the local O'Briens simply because my insurance company said take the car there, tell them your with Ryno insurance, and you wont even have to fill in a form or anything.

They put in a heated windscreen, even after I pointed out it didn't have one and a heated screen would mess with my through the glass radio antenna.

They claim there only ever was a heated screen on L322 range rovers

Hmm well really not feeling so great about this screen. I'm sure the guys knew what they were doing but even though it was all paid for when I heard him say "I don't know why anyone would ever want to buy a Land Rover" I should have just said "thank you but I'll get someone else to take care of it I think"...that's another alarm bell, someone who hates working on Landys obviously isn't going to know or care about all their little nuances...dammit!!

Fingers crossed it doesn't leak. I don't know how a glass specialist who does ONLY GLASS wouldn't want to do every job right smack bang on the money how it's meant to be done. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Just hose it and check.

Maybe pull out the kick trims and A pillar trims after watering to check behind them.

It took a windscreen place 3 attempts to seal the windscreen in our office's 76 series Landcruiser. A pretty common vehicle out here. First repair attempt they just squirted in extra sealant which made it heaps worse and the trim didn't even fit afterwards but they gave it back like that anyway.

Agree with you HOW HARD IS IT.Why would a reputable business who tout their wares on ads that have you looking for the remote every time have a problem with fitting the correct windscreen.If its an insurance job then its a no brainer put the OEM windscreen in.Surely they have learn't this lesson before.
Take it back purely for the fact that it looks crap and is staring you in the face.

From memory, when a Disco 1 windscreen is fitted they have to have a new rubber seal put in that's a copuple of hundred dollars, I guess If you don't it WILL leak Probably why you have gaps, maybe.
