Throw away the head. They are impossible to repair/ weld properly. NEW heads ex UK are very good value.

most likely cracks in the head, if they are only in the inlet runners you can get that fixed.
if its coming down the valve stems... you can try to repair by reline but its only got about a 30% success rate.

So that happened quickly, form the vinegar chips to a thousand bucks and shipping from the UK. Wholly..... not what I wanted to hear....
I would repeat the words of Gov. Romney when he lost to Obama...."How the hell did that happened??"
I wasn't saying it IS the problem, it is just that is one place/ way coolant can get into the engine, and is easy to check.

the few times I've seen it personally its been on a head thats been over heated, warped, skimmed (not straightened) and then put back on because the heads warped when it heats up it cracks apart

There's a bloke on eBay (brisbane) selling complete heads for $700+, Regardes frank.
So I finally took the inlet manifold off and I guess there are no traces of water or coolant there, unless I can't see it.
In that case do you have any other ideas as to why the vinegar smell?
It drives fine, but my concern is growing that I will damage something if I continue to drive the rig in this condition.
Thanks!
Is there something in the diesel fuel in Indonesia that would make this? Do other diesel vehicles give off this odour?
Another test you could try to see if it is coolant or not is to completely drain the coolant - drain the radiator and block - and replace it all with water, see if it still smells. As water won't smell if burned, if the smell goes away it does suggest that coolant is getting in to the combustion somewhere.
Indonesion sold vehicles may also have a cat converter, this will cause some stink if coolant etc goes through it, too.

@ JustinC,My Disco tdi 300 is a Japanese import.
I will check if other vehicles smell like that too, and as suggested replace coolant with water, and see if anything changes.
I ran one tank on cheap diesel, and since then switched to Shell, (twice the price). There is a huge difference in performance, and the truck runs much quieter.
Thanks!
