    need another engine

    Hi,
Mate who has been driving my 300tdi auto for a while now and has had no problems with it.
He brought it up(lives at Ulladulla) yesterday and took the dunnydore ute.
I started it up this morning and the racket coming from the engine made me wince..
Took it down to my friendly mechanic and he comfirmed my suspicions.
    Bottom end gone..

.. do you want factory reconditioned short engine or would that be too exxy ? ($2k + freight +GST +orp cost - you'd cop gst because it's over $1k)

I got a head from Turner's and had it in 3 working days - they told me that they had delivered short engines to Oz in a week at economy freight rates

they have other options - take a look at their site

    could be worth a phone call 0011 44 1342 834713

Is further diagnosis a good idea?
I would argue how an engine sounds is not always how it is?

Being such a simple engine to work on, and by the sounds of it you are thinking of replacing the engine yourself. Perhaps a little more investigation may save the cost of parts you dont necessarily need?

    Hi Roverresque,
When I first started it this morning, the level of noise it was making was not pleasant. It was like a lawn mower at full blast, that's how loud it was.
I lifted the bonnet to see if I could pinpoint the noise, seemed like it was down below the head.
After taking it to my mechanic, who confirmed it was something down the bottom end,I'm now after another engine.

After ringing up my local Landy place at Silverdale,he said a recon engine with all new innards would only cost me $2750.00.
This is WITHOUT any of the associated bits and pieces, just the engine, which is what I'm after.
It will take him a few days to build, but that wont matter to me as I need to save some pennys first.
I had already rang 1/2 doz different 4by places to see if they had an engine, but they didn't.
I will talk to my mechanic next week to see how much it will be to do a change over as I don't have the required tools nor lifting appliance to do it myself.

    cheers

Have you tried TRS (Triumph Rover Spares) in Adelaide? I'd have thought they'd have several engines in.

You can also try Rovacraft, as they import complete new 300Tdi's.

The auto's flex plates make that sort of racket when they start to let go, pull the engine first and check before you go to the expense of another engine.

    Hi Wrinklearthur,

Its definately the engine,I live approx 10k's from town, went to see a mate first who is roughly 18k's from where I live, then to mechanic.

The cost is irrelevant, its the inconvenience of not having that vehicle on the road.

    cheers

I think 2.75k for a new engine is pretty good.

Why don't you buy a rolled/written off 300tdi Disco auto and just transfer the motor and transmission, cheaper, and there are all the extra body/interior parts.

    cheers
