    ZF auto temps?

I have just fitted a temp gauge for the auto in my V8 D1, in the same line as the factory temp switch.

With normal driving at 100km/h, 20deg day, temp is hovering around 50 deg. Pushed hard in 3rd so the TC doesn't lock up and it will rise to around 60 deg. Around town stop start and it mite just nudge 70.

Is this normal? Was kinda thinking it would be higher and 50 on the open road was a bit on the cool side.

    Hi,
I have a temp gauge on the same line but a little closer to the gearbox than the original.
I see normal temps of between 43c to 50c when cruising at highway speeds on flat roads. However when towing the Camper up steep hills and lock-up can't be achieved I can see temps of up to 110c.
I have a bigger P38 cooler now and prior to this I would see the trans warning light come on when towing up very steep hills, and that means 135c which is not good for the fluid and gearbox as I later found out!

I also see temps of around 70c when in heavy stop - start traffic. So I'd say your temps are pretty normal.

    Cheers

    stop panicing.

if you're using a decent DEX III your oil is good to about 160 degrees. and then it starts to exponentially degrade.

from memory the oil life remaining halves for every 10 degrees over you go and no, it doesnt regerneate.

so oil that might last 2 years will last 1 if you run it over 160

6 months if you run 170+

    or a combination there of....

(IIRC the yearly figure is based on 8 operating hours per day, 5 days per week and 4 weeks per month so 1920, call it 2000 operating hours per year)

For whats its worth, after a weekend away in it, moderate load, pushed hard up hills both onroad and off, the highest temp i seen was just on 100c.
