As per the picture above, your build plate should be on the radiator support panel. It will have "BUILT" at the top with the month and year stamped next to it.

Paul, that definitely is a compliance date of 1/99 (January 1999). And it's a little difficult to tell from the photo, but I think the tenth and eleventh characters of the VIN are WA, which would signify a 1998 MY Discovery 1.
haha thanks mate! i'm such an idiot, i mistook the 1/99 (think i better get some new glasses) thought it was 1799
Hey mate, yours is 136 vehicles older than mine (almost twins). Mine was manufactured in May 1998 but I took delivery and was first registered in Jan 1999 so is considered a 99 model but I still call it a '98. I was told if I sold it, it could be legitimately advertised as a 99 model but I always thought (quite rightly as it turns out) that that would just lead to confusion..
Mine is an SE model which had a bit extra fruit added as a run-out incentive over the base S model. (5 x alloys, D/Side SRS, Alarm & remote locking and slightly upgraded stereo)

Yep definitely 1/99 - I am surprised the build date was not stamped on the Landrover build plate above the VIN - most likely around Oct 98.

126 is pretty close, were both probably parked in the same factory car park at some point after production... must admit i was surprised it wasn't on the the vin as well, think thats what caught me out.
From the photo's it looks more like a D1 update than the original D1.
It seems to have the cut aways in the upper inner corners of the headlights, the original D1 had full rectangular lights with no cut away. I know because I had to return the wrong model headlight for my Oct\93 D1 a while back.
just had a look and the headlights do have a cut away on the top inner corner, i used to have an early discovery about 10 years ago and i think thats something that confused me with the model as this one looks different to that
