    5L Holden V8 engineering

Hey Guys I'm thinking of buying a disco 1 that's had a 5l holden v8 conversion. Its been professionally fitted with receipts provided but when I asked if it's been engineered I was told it wasn't required as you can increase the power by 20% without needing to or something along those lines. I know the rules are different between the states but is this right? The car is in NSW.

I'm no expert on this but I was under the impression that this would require an engineer's certificate as it isn't a 'standard option'. My brother years ago modified a Bedford van with a 308 in it and it needed an engineer's certificate - admittedly it had more than 20% extra horse power after the mod but the engineer was very detailed in all the requirements and that was 30 years ago. I can only assume that the requirements have gotten stricter over that intervening time.

In other posts I've read finding a sympathetic engineer has been difficult for some. I'd be cautious and run it past the RTA in NSW. You could check the rego paper and see what capacity it has on it, if it doesn't say 5L then it is suspect and will require more investigation.

I would suggest there is no way it is legal without engineering approval.

Also, I would have thought a 308 would have more than 20% more power than a Rover 3.9. Engineering approval would be required for that conversion either way.

To get to the core of the matter ... A licenced Number plate is registered to a car that has a VIN number and a Engine number. Basically, the question would be is it (License papers) Registered with the 308 Engine number.

Yeah my thoughts exactly, looks like I would be up for around 6-700 to get it engineered

And the 5l must be the same year or after the production of the D1 and have all emission gear for the year of manufacture in place.

I am sure the law is that engineering is necessary for any engine over 15% CAPACITY increase not power.

It is all spelled out on the RMS/RTA site, as to what is self certified and what needs certification by an engineer.
