I doubt if the sensor that's designed to be immersed inside the hot coolant flow cares much about the air temperature at the terminal end, seeing that the thermal conductivity of water is many times that of air. But I could be wrong.![]()
The cowling helps the discovery to go faster. It’s like the ram air system for the radiators on the wings of the bf109s. As they close they compress the air coming out and get a bit of a boost. That and the reduction in drag. You take the cowling away and you lose 4 of your 9 horses.

So been pouring some cash into the old girl lately and now it's got a fresh set of 245/75/16 MTR/Kevlar tyres on it (got a ripper deal from Beaurepairs having to match the price I found online for that size at a place called Car Tyres & You Car Tyres & You for quality affordable tyres & best prices in Carnegie, Malvern & Melbourne - Keilor Park, Carnegie, Ormond, Melbourne, Car Tyres & You), a fantastic set of Black Widow drawers in the back (heavy buggers) with big thanks to George (cripesamighty) from this forum, also it has a 45L sill tank along the passenger side with a switch in the cabin to pump into the main tank once it gets low, with the filler cap inside the rear passenger side wheel arch (Uptech did a great job installing that). Got a great new GME UHF radio with an RFI antenna (longer whip in the cabin) from Telstat comms (not the best communication for a communication store haha but still okay to deal with). Then the fun lights...put new Fyrlyt 5000s on the front, and took the older Narva halogens which were up front and had them put onto the roof rack edges facing 45 degree angles out to the side and have a 28" Ironman curved lightbar in the middle up top for good flood. All lights wired up to the high beams and separate switches so I can have all or none on with the high beams. The lights work a treat! Guy selling them to me thought I was afraid of the dark!
Anyway, she's looking like the business now! All the stuff you can't see from the outside is things like the timing belt was done with all the related seals etc. that you can get to while it's off, also the radiator was checked and completely cleaned out, found to be about 40% blocked but still in great shape so just unblocked it and all good. All hoses and belts and clamps new. New rotoflex and rear diff pinion seal. Lots of great stuff, I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but oh well
Got a fridge for the back but I think I'll have to chop out a bit of that rear pet barrier to be able to fit it in...damn Disco 1 boots are so shallow and I don't want to put the fridge lengthways. Not sure what I'll do about that...
Looks great - one of the better D1 examples around these days.
Hope your trans continental trip is mechanically unremarkable but great in all other ways.
I 'll be interested to hear about your fuel economy for the trip.
Well up until now my D1 has always gotten me about 900km from a full main tank of diesel and a little 17L tank of LPG (with a Bee Utey D-Gas setup from a while ago). That didn't really seem to change whether it was city or country driving. Before I was driving on some really old (but still decent) Cooper AT/R tyres, same size, so I'm also curious how my fuel economy gets affected with the new more aggressive tyres.
One thing that's going on is that I'm getting a weird noise when driving now, at first I thought it was a tyre noise but now I'm not so sure, kind of sounds like my Disco is a tram and driving on tram tracks, bit of a weird drone and it kind of keeps going until I'm stopped and it slows down as I'm slowing down. Only starts after I've been driving a bit and everything is warmed up. Maybe a wheel bearing but haven't had a chance to check yet...
if you are doing a trans cont trip mostly on road i would put your old tires back on. use the new ones just for day trips in mud. bit aggressive and loud for a nice tarmac tour. AT tires are more than good enough for the occasional off road exploration on your trip. those muddies will drive you crazy on open road and use up more fuel. just my opinion. might not bother you so much.
