Removed the head of my tdi, couple of bolts seemed loser than others and in the process of removal i found a very loose clamp on a heater hose.
When moving the hose out of the way i noticed it swivel on the firewall heater pipe .
Ran a straight edge over head and no noticeable warpage, new gasket/bolts/coolant/injector washers next week then put it back together next weekend.

Why did you remove the head? What symptoms?

Replaced mech lift pump with goss electrical pump (due to lever arm problem)... tested 100%...test drive 100%...satisfaction 100%....

now to head bush...in 4 days time...why do all land rover hassles happen immediately before a big trip?

    regards robbo

I'll second that notion. I'm supposed to head out Saturday on a big road trip and since Monday the car has been at the shop. Hopefully in the next couple of days it'll be back in fine form and ready to rip.

And I've been toying with the idea of installing an electric pump, but I'll wait for this lift pump to fail first .

Today I changed the oil in the transmission, the t-case (had to drill and tap the drain plug hole as some previous guerilla buggered it all to hell and jammed a cut down oversized bolt in there with a crudely cut piece of thin steel for a washer/seal then wiped stag over it), and the diffs (though I may need to check these again and add more since I did it with the car on a lift and the axles hanging down not compressed and sitting level at the filler plug).

I forgot to mention, yesterday I went by a garage sale and scored some accessories for a little next to nothing. I walked away with a little electric air pump (not a fast inflater by any means, but better than a hand pump or nothing should I get a flat), an aluminium ladder supposedly off a Pajero with a roof rack (not a perfect fit for my car and rack, but close enough I can make it work), and a pair of snow chains the guy believed were sized to fit 205-16 tyres (christ they're heavy, but they fit my 245/75r16 tyres and at the price I couldn't pass them up even though I'll probably never see snow in this car).

Be thankful that your problems happen just BEFORE you head out bush and not while you're out there.

    Ha! Fair point.

Today I managed to top off the swivel pins with oil (not sure how much the one shot grease fills them up but they took a fair bit of oil to fill to the bottom of the filler plug hole, maybe a liter between the two), checked the oil in the diffs again (this time with the car sitting on the ground) and added a a bit more fluid, ran the wiring from my auxiliary battery down along the frame to the back and up into the rear of the car where my power inverter will go, and then I went to Bunnings to get stuff for tomorrow's project (a rear shelf/bed platform, a mount for my roof rack ladder, and an awning type thing).

Yesterday I got the ladder and awning project completed, then went to the local upholsterer for some foam (for the bed) and picked up some cloth for curtains.

Today I changed the oil, greased all the ball joints, u-joints, and drive shafts, finished building and installing a shelf/bed platform in the back, tried cleaning /degreasing the engine bay and mechanical bits with (this way I can't pretend that oil was already there), and finally loaded it up with all my stuff.

Hitting the road tomorrow. Heading down to Melbourne to pick up a friend and from there out into the bush for 10 days. Wish me luck.

Also if anyone between Toowoomba and Melbourne is interested in a set of stock 300Tdi Disco springs and/or Boge shocks still in decent usable condition let me know. I'll be taking the A39 there so I can meet along that route.
