Looked under it to see a large oil puddle under the transfer case.

Had to sort out the alternator.
    Marelli type.
Got an aftermarket replacement model(previous horror experiences with Marelli electrics!).

When it got hot, it would cease all activity and tacho would stop.

Charge levels went from about 13.8-13.9 V with no load, now up to 14.2-14.4 V.
Also, voltage drop with a load is slightly less.
average voltage drop with ventilation fan, and say brake lights used to be 0.5v, now 0.4-0.3.

Main point is that it seems to keep the battery in better condition overnight.
battery used to drop down to 11.9v overnight but now seems to hold at about 12.5-12.7.
    Aux battery even better.

If it is large and sudden, sounds like it may be a seal on one of the output shafts. Reasonably easy fix.

Finished making a new mount and surround for the radio.
The old plastic surround area was finally cactus, got tired of holding it in place with shims and wedges.
The new one is made from various pieces of aluminium, riveted together then screwed and braced into the old metal radio support which is still OK. Used VHB tape and sikaflex to hold the front of the main support in place, on what was left of the plastic above the temp control knobs.
I got a new Kenwood "no mech" radio unit, its a lot lighter and smaller the old CD units, so less strain on the surrounds. (No mech means no lump of a CD player - haven't played a CD in years). Also this new unit comes with bluetooth and a remote hands free mic for the bluetooth phone connection. SCA had them on special for $118, reasonable I think.
Hid the lower fixings with a piece of painted matt black angle which is taped in place. Not shown here is a bead of sika that fills the space between the lower trim aluminium and plastic, just to finish it off.
So now I have a new no rattle radio that doesn't fall out over bumps, pretty happy with the result.
Some photos below - they uploaded in the reverse order for some reason.

Finally pulled the speedo to check the needle jumping at speeds under 60 or so. Pulled inner cable, lubed up and reinstalled. Seems to have worked.

Thanks. The original speakers were replaced long ago with some decent quality replacements from the auto parts shop, front and back are a standard size. Lots available depending what you want to spend. Not really into hifi sound, just want it to be clear and un distorted.

Now I have the name for my disco, "two extremes"...

Ever since i got the disco, I have been slowly going over it and looking for issues as well as servicing everything to make sure it lasts for the next year..

Every time I do anything like replaced all steering tie rods or shocks, I keep finding things done at both extremes, either bolts so tight they break or nearly break me or other side, so loose, lucky they didnt fall off... Like tie rod end, looked a bit funny when I got home, was told previous owner was replacing them, one at a time... Ok, thats fine but the castle nut needs to be tight before putting split pin in...

Latest fun is the auto, just done a service..expecting to remove dipstick tube and move crossmember out of way to drop pan... yeh right, dipstick tube so tight I bent pan slightly, tried all sorts of tricks, hammer either side of nut, still no go... bugger it, exhaust off bend tube and then lo and behold, some DH hammered an allen key into the torx head bolt holding filter and pickup on... Yeh great, very smart...

Anyway, serviced now, no leaks, auto likes me still and I got it all back together eventually...

Should have been 1 hour job, with my health, I added another 3 hours, but it took me 10 hours all up, started yesterday at 11 am, knocked off at dark and finished this arvo...

so its "2 Extremes" from now on... Oh and if I find who the mechanic is that worked on it before, I will make sure I dont even send my worst enemy to them...
