    Aussie Desert Cooler Radiator

Hi All. Have been having an issue where the temp at thermostat housing is around 10degrees cooler than the temp from sensor I placed on top of the head toward the rear. (90 95 versus 100 - 108 under load ) With new water pump, thermostat etc I thought a new radiator would be the go. If that's not the problem well at least I have a nice new one anyway! It arrived today, eventually, with separate oil cooler. Haven't got it home yet to see but it looks as wide as the whole existing set up inc intercooler. has anyone fitted an Aussie Desert Cooler into D1 before? If so, how did you go with the intercooler and the oil cooler? I will need to get new hoses or extensions made for the oil cooler pipes. am hoping intercooler can stay where it is. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

    cheers Shaun

Well it certainly isn't going to help the issue you're looking at...

What may well happen is whilst cleaning your cooling system you clean out the system enough..

Variation front to rear is real in older engine designs.

Did you fit a genuine water pump or aftermarket (impeller design / construction can have an impact to flow)

    How is the current radiator?

How clean is your cooling system in general?

My 300tdi defender is exactly the same, i have a vdo sender in the top of the head going to a vdo gauge and an auber sender in the thermostat housing, the 10 degrees difference is normal according to those i have asked, this engine is 100k old and was fully reco'd, the block was acid dipped/washed with new camshaft bearings and all welsh plugs/gallery pugs removed, the previous engine ran the same temps.
I run an oversize allisport radiator
    I wouldnt be concerned

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't expecting head temps to be well over the 100. From what I have read the failure of standard sender units to give a true reading is the cause of a lot of problems, hence my extra gauge. The motor has been recently rebuilt, water pump is aftermarket but I still have the original which appears to be OK. Pulled out the old radiator this evening and popped the new one in. as I thought, it takes up the whole space, no room at all for the intercooler. It's a good looking unit but the info supplied with it was non existent, save for an invoice. The rest is a figure it out for yourself affair I think. If anyone has fitted an Aussie Desert Cooler unit into a D1 or any diesel Landy for that matter I would love to see a few images. Any thoughts on where to put the intercooler would be much appreciated.
    Cheers Shaun

Sounds like you have got a V8 radiator if it is full width. For the time being you will have to put the old one back after flushing it and replace the intercooler. I do not think you could put the original intercooler anywhere else but where it was designed to go. You could look at aftermarket front mounted ones possibly. Type and possability will depend on if you have AC. There are other possabilities such as air to water barrel ones, quit a bit of work and extra equipment. Simplest way is to leave original and accept temp difference as others have stated.
